Elestee, First of Her Kind
Around this time last year, Elestee was unveiled to the world as the latest Mavin. She was the first of her kind to join the roster; an alternative-leaning rapper, singer and poet with a lethal arsenal of bars and sleek vocals to boot. Her unveiling announcement was shortly followed by the release of her debut EP, a five-track introduction to the sublime world of Poisnbby. Afrocritik called it “a harmonious blend of artistry and promise“, while Wordplay Magazine described her as “a complex and layered young woman with various multitudes and a penchant for clairvoyance.“
Elestee’s effortless versatility is immediately apparent on “Lifesize Teddy”, which features a motley of sonic influences. This diverse body of work also features a star-studded producer lineup, including Grammy-nominated producers Andre Vibez and London, as well as Mavin’s very own SEVN and Prestige.
Stand-out tracks include party girl anthem “Hypnotic”, which remains one of her topmost streamed songs, the dreamy third track “Butterflies” and “John Wick”, a saucy amapiano track that demands to be listened to over and over again. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this project, however, are Elestee’s ingenious lyrical storytelling and animated vocals. She is fluid and mutable, embodying whatever persona each track requires with an easy dexterity. Songs like “Prophecy” give us a glimpse into the grounded psyche behind the music- her belief that her very existence points to something larger than life is enough to get listeners to believe in her too.
All in all, “Lifesize Teddy” leaves the listener unquestionably convinced that Elestee is truly something special. To many she was-and is-a breath of fresh air, representing a generation of young women who refuse to shrink in order to fit the mold of convention.
