Born Divine Ikubor, Rema was first discovered through a series of viral car freestyles that caught the attention of Mavin label boss Don Jazzy, who went on to sign him in 2019. The Benin-bred prodigy christened his highly anticipated debut with his first ever global hit “Dumebi”, marking the beginning of what has already proved to be one of the most illustrious careers in Afrobeats history.
With his career off to an exceptional start, Rema released his multi-platinum debut album in March 2022, ushering in the era of billions and international acclaim. With the announcement of “Rave and Roses” came the release of its second lead single “Calm Down”, which exploded into a global sensation after Selena Gomez was featured on the remix in 2022. The track peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it the highest charting Afrobeats song of all time. Till date it remains the longest-running number one song on the US Afrobeats Songs chart.
In 2024, Rema released his widely polarizing-and critically acclaimed sophomore album “HEIS”. Upon release, “HEIS” broke the record for the biggest first day streams of a Nigerian album on Spotify at the time and emerged as one of the most streamed Nigerian albums on the platform in 2024. It earned Rema his first Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Performance, a full circle moment that has cemented him as a principal custodian of African music.
